9 Steps to Jump-Starting Your Auto

A weak or apparently dead car battery is the last thing you’d want while driving in the middle of nowhere. In case this happens to you, you’ll need another driver to lend their car to jump-start yours.

You also need to know how to do it properly. Otherwise, you might damage your car and that of the other driver who tried to help you. The resulting damages could cost you hundreds of dollars in auto repairs.

It’s always best that you come prepared not only with the right equipment but with the jump-starting know-how as well.

To jump-start your car in case your battery gives up on you, here’s what you should do:

  1. Safety first.

Before starting the process, make sure that the environment is safe. Remove any dangling clothing and accessories you’re wearing as they might get caught up in the moving engine parts. Don’t let any metal objects get in contact with the batteries.

  1. Line up both cars.

Place them in park or neutral and shut off their ignition. See to it that both parking brakes are engaged.

  1. Attach the red jump lead.

Connect one of the red clips with the working battery’s positive terminal to your nonworking battery’s positive terminal.

  1. Attach the black jump lead.

Next, take one of the black clips and connect it to the negative terminal of the working battery. Clamp the other end to the unpainted metal on the engine block of the car with the weak battery. Keep the clamp away from the battery, any moving parts, and the fuel system.

  1. Turn on the other car.

After three minutes of keeping both engines off, start the working car’s engine and allow it to run for a minute.

  1. Turn on your car.

Start the engine with the non-working battery.

  1. Let both cars run.

For at least 10 minutes, leave them to idle at a fast pace.

  1. Turn off the cars and disconnect the leads.

Once both engines are off, carefully remove the leads in the reverse order you connected them. Make sure that the leads don’t touch each other, or either car, as you disconnect them.

  1. Restart your car.

If your car still fails to start, restart the jump-starting process. Check if the cables are connected properly while having the other driver run their engine for five minutes. If your car still won’t start, you might need to seek professional help.
