What is Heroes on the Water? Learn about the Group that’s Helping Troubled Veterans Through Kayak Fishing

Did you know that kayak fishing and other outdoor activities are effective ways to heal the wounds of traumatized individuals or those suffering from mental disorders?

Heroes on the Water has found this to be true. Now, what is Heroes on the Water? It’s a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers alternative therapeutic programs for active military servicemen and women, veterans, and first-responders. It’s one of the nonprofits that we at Veteran Car Donations have partnered with.

The charity works primarily by using the sport of kayak fishing and other outdoor activities as tools to help its beneficiaries relax, rehabilitate, and reintegrate with society, thus improving their emotional and physical wellbeing.

Heroes on the Water has been organizing numerous free kayak fishing trips since 2007. This year, they started offering first-responders and their families with their ecotherapy program, which provides a wide range of treatment options aimed at improving the mental and physical wellbeing of individuals as they engage in therapeutic outdoor activities. Experts have found that connecting with nature provides plenty of positive health benefits.

Heroes on the Water has already helped more than 38,000 troubled veterans and their family members. As a result of their ecotherapy program, their beneficiaries have registered 56% less stress, 60% less re-experience of the traumatic events in their lives, 63% less avoidance of memories of those events, and 62% less hyper-vigilance.

Why Our Troops and Vets Need Assistance

Hundreds and thousands of our military servicemen and women and veterans have engaged in combat during their deployment overseas. In those times, they endured life-threatening and traumatic experiences. They had been shot at, seen comrades get killed, rocked by nerve-shattering gunshots and explosions, and had close brushes with death.

These events traumatized many of our troops and veterans, causing them to be stricken with post-traumatic stress disorder (PSTD) and other mental illnesses. According to the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, PTSD affects almost 31% of Vietnam veterans, 12% of Gulf War (Desert Storm) veterans, and 11-20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is also a major health issue that affects troops and veterans. In fact, over 320,000 of them who have taken part in recent wars have been diagnosed with TBI.

These are some of the factors that hinder our veterans from reintegrating with society and transitioning to civilian life. They badly assistance, which they fully deserve considering the invaluable services they’ve done for us and our nation, having risked their lives and endured enormous sacrifices to defend our freedoms and protect our security.

How You Can Help Our Suffering Veterans

You can easily provide meaningful and life-transforming assistance to our suffering veterans. If you have an old and worn-out vehicle just gathering dust in your garage, driveway, or backyard, you can donate it to us at Veteran Car Donations. We will transform that old vehicle into a new source of hope and wellbeing for our nation’s heroes.

You can donate a car, truck, an SUV, motorcycle, van, tractor or any type of vehicle regardless of its condition—whether good or bad.

We sell all donated vehicles via auction and use the proceeds to support the programs of our nonprofit partners, Heroes on the Water being one of them. These charities provide needy veterans with a variety of services including:

  • Mentoring and job training programs
  • Building mortgage-free, specially adapted homes for severely injured veterans and mortgage-free homes for homeless veterans and their families
  • Transitioning assistance
  • Tutoring support and education scholarships for returning troops and veterans
  • Grief counseling for veterans and the families of veterans who lost their lives on the line of duty
  • Supporting the spouses and families of our nation’s fallen heroes

You will also personally benefit from your car donation since you’ll get to claim the highest possible tax deduction after your vehicle is sold.
