American National Nutrition Month: Here Is How to Avoid Diabetes, Cardiovascular Disease, and Obesity

Everybody loves to eat. There’s just something about food that makes everything better — as if all the negativity in us would suddenly disappear when we start eating our favorite food! Eating is considered as one of the best ways to combat stressful days, although it has to depend on the choice of food.

The only thing is, too much of it can lead to health problems such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, or obesity. Many of us have a habit of eating whatever suits our taste buds, to the extent that we forget about the risks that may come along with it. We may not even be aware of the harmful chemicals and preservatives in the food we eat.

This is the very reason why nutritionists from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have come up with the National Nutrition Month. Held annually every March in the country, this event is an educational campaign that raises awareness on the importance of healthy food choices. It’s all about encouraging the public to eat smart for a better and happier lifestyle.

The question is, why do we need to keep ourselves informed about proper nutrition? Well, for instance, it provides a huge number of benefits to our physical and mental wellbeing. There are many reasons why maintaining a balanced diet is a big “must.”

Aside from giving us all the essential nutrients our bodies need, clean eating helps us get back in shape, and it also keeps our ideal weight. By consuming the right amount and type of foods, we become less vulnerable to diseases, and we can even have a longer lifespan. If you wish to live until you reach your centennial year or even beyond that, better start getting rid of your sweets and junk food!

Nutrition Facts You Need to Know

If you’ve just decided to start a healthy way of life, you must already be aware of the important facts that surround the world of food. It’s time to trade your Ben & Jerry’s into bean and cherries!

  1. Refined carbohydrates are dangerous to your health.

Most of you may already know that too many carbs, refined or unrefined, can lead to obesity and other diseases. However, did you know that some unrefined carbs can actually be beneficial to us? We even need a moderate amount of them to fuel our energy.

If you plan to restrict or reduce carbohydrate intake in your diet, don’t do it with refined carbs. Refined carbs are one of the deadliest sources that can destroy your body.

Not like the unrefined ones, they lack the nutrients we need. Worse, refined carbs lead to elevated blood sugar, which in turn will cause diabetes. Better cut back on your pizza and pasta if you’re all about the healthy lifestyle.

  1. Fats can be good.

Don’t like the idea of removing fatty foods from your diet? Great news! You don’t have to! As long as they’re not trans or saturated fat-based, you’re good to go!

While many believe that fats are a complete no-no when it comes to eating clean, this is not really the case. Polyunsaturated, monounsaturated, and Omega-3 fats are actually essential to a healthy diet. They’ll even reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes!

If you’re looking for good fats, you’ll certainly find them in fish, avocados, olive oils, walnuts, and almonds. Dark chocolates are also rich in healthy fats. Looks like you already know what you’ll have for dessert!

  1. Sugars can also be good!

As in the case of fats, not all forms of sugars can be seen as our enemies. Although sugars contain no nutrients whatsoever, natural sugars from fruits are needed by our bodies. Just see to it that you’re not consuming those that come from processed foods.

Sugars that you need to stay away from are dextrose, maltose, sucrose, or other forms of artificial sweeteners. If one of your nightmares involves getting obese or type 2 diabetes, avoid any of these at all costs. You can always have fruit shakes if you’re craving for something sweet.

  1. Vegetables are rich in nutrients.

Any vegetable contains all varieties of nutrients that make a healthy body. Fiber, minerals, antioxidants, vitamins — you name it, vegetables have them all! With these nutrients known to lower chances of diseases, it’s no wonder these leafy foods are always associated with good health.

Adding vegetables to your diet can really make a difference in your health, even if it’s just a small portion. When you were a little kid, your mom would always tell you to eat your veggies. Now that you’re an adult, it all seems to make sense.

Learn to Be a Healthy Eater

Food can be difficult to resist. The more sinful it is, the harder it is to control our urges. However, if you have the discipline and dedication to turn your nasty eating habit into one that gives you a healthy and leaner body, you’ll definitely get there.

Here are some useful tips that can get you to start eating better:

  • Portion control. When eating or drinking, it’s always a good idea to consume only a moderate amount of food or drinks for your body. Too much or too little will never work.
  • Go, grow, and glow. A healthy balanced diet usually contains this food triad. Get the energy you need from your go’s; improve your body’s muscles and bones with the grow foods; and stay healthy by having your daily dose of fruits and vegetables.
  • Avoid processed food as much as possible. If there’s one group of food that you completely need to banish, it’s anything that’s processed. Processed food not only contains harmful and artificial ingredients, it also has zero nutrients in it.
  • Reduce your intake of sugars and saturated fats. These are the triggers for diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. Need we say more? Focus on unsaturated fats and sugars from fruits instead.
  • Never skip breakfast. Remember, you always need to have a full stomach to get your day started. Skip it, and you’ll definitely have a hard time concentrating and performing.
