How to Show Your Appreciation for Veterans And Active Members of the Military
Are you looking to find ways to show your appreciation and support for those who served and are still serving in our nation’s armed forces? This May is Military Appreciation Month, an annual month-long event where we are reminded to recognize and acknowledge the importance of the roles that members of the U.S. Armed Forces have played in the history of our nation. During this year’s Military Appreciation Month, let’s pause to take a moment to honor the services and sacrifices made by our heroes.
You’ve probably verbalized your gratitude to those who’ve rendered service to our country in the past. However, if you want to do something different this year, Veteran Car Donations shares a few tips on how to show your appreciation for veterans and still active members of our military.
- Spend time with the veterans in your family.
Almost everyone has someone in the family who’s a veteran. If you happen to have one or two relatives who served in our armed forces, we encourage you to talk to them about their experiences in the service and their transition into the civilian sector. They’ll surely appreciate that you care enough to be with them and listen to them.
- Drop by the veteran hospital and visit an ailing vet.
Many veterans out there feel like they’re all alone in this world. It’s even worse when they’re sick or injured. It would mean much to them if you took the time to visit them in the hospital.
- Volunteer to feed homeless veterans.
Grab the chance to volunteer to feed the homeless at the nearest shelter because chances are, you’ll get to encounter homeless veterans there. When you spot one or two, remember to thank them for all that they’ve done.
- Spend an hour with a vet at a VA retirement home.
If you want to brighten up the day of some aging veterans, spend an hour or two with them at the VA retirement home. You can take with you some board games or large print books that they could read or you can offer to read to them.
- Spread the word on social media.
Use your favorite social media platform to let the world know how much you appreciate the service rendered by our veterans. If you want, you can even post articles about the challenges that our heroes face as they reintegrate themselves into society.
- Give your place in line to a veteran.
If you find yourself waiting in line to board a plane, or at the grocery store, or even at the DMV, and you notice that a veteran or a military member is further back in the line, offer to give your place to them.
- Pay for their meals in a restaurant.
Do you want to know how you can give veterans or military members a reason to smile when you find them at a restaurant? The answer is simple: Ask the server to bring to you their bills and pay for them. If you want, you can leave a note on the bills to thank them for their service to our nation.
- Donate a vehicle to support them.
If you’re fed up with keeping a vehicle you no longer want or need, you can just donate it to us at Veteran Car Donations to help our IRS-certified 501(C)3 nonprofit partners provide vital services to our nation’s struggling heroes. We will auction off your donated vehicle and use the proceeds to fund services for our veterans such as general transitioning assistance, free mental health care, mortgage-free housing, education scholarships, and employment services among others.
In return for your donation, you’ll receive a 100% tax-deductible receipt, which you can use in claiming your tax write-off in the next tax season. Moreover, you’ll get to enjoy our free towing services and quick, convenient, and no-paperwork donation process.
