We Help You Diagnose the Problem Here!

Since a vehicle has multiple moving parts, hearing an unfamiliar noise from under the hood can be scary. While some of those strange sounds may not be cause for concern, others can indicate that something pricey is about to break down. Fortunately, you don’t have to be an expert in complex engine systems to determine what’s wrong with your vehicle.

Kinds of Car Engine Noises and What They Mean

Over time, you get used to your engine’s distinctive sound, either a quiet hum or a glorious roar. For this reason, hearing a new sound popping up can be unnerving. To help you diagnose the problem and save your engine, Veteran Car Donations has compiled the most common car engine noises and what they mean.

  1. Tapping and clicking

Your engine is telling you that your oil is low when it makes a ticking, tapping, or clicking noise. Look at the dipstick to verify and add more oil if warranted. However, it’s important to note that adding more oil isn’t a long-term fix. Have a mechanic check your car for internal or external oil leaks that could be responsible for your low oil levels.

However, if the oil isn’t low and you still hear the distinctive noise, you might have a valvetrain issue. Since the valvetrain is the mechanism that opens and closes the intake and exhaust valves in an internal combustion engine, the tapping noise could be a sign of a serious problem that you should consult with your mechanic immediately.

  1. Grinding

You’ll hear a grinding noise while driving and idling if you’re dealing with worn-out bearings. You can also hear this noise during shifting if you have a worn-out clutch. A bad CV joint or another suspension-related problem can also cause a grinding noise when you’re taking a turn.

The noise can likewise occur when you brake if your brake pads are completely worn down to the metal. You shouldn’t take the grinding sound lightly from your engine or other vehicle components. Anytime you hear this odd noise, you need to get your vehicle to a local service shop as soon as possible.

  1. Squealing

A loose or worn-out serpentine belt can cause an annoying squeal from under the hood. Since this long rubber belt delivers power to your engine’s vital systems, including the A/C compressor, power steering pump, alternator, and water pump, you wouldn’t want to ignore the need for a replacement.

If the squealing turns up during turns, you likely have a problem with your steering system. However, if you hear the sound every time you step on the brake pedal, most likely you have worn-out brake pads due to regular wear and tear. You should have your brake pads replaced as soon as you hear them squeal.
