Here’s How to Cut Down on Your Gas Expenses

Driving a car has become more expensive with gas prices continuing to rise as a result of inflation and other economic factors. However, the good news is that you can still find ways to cut down on your gas expenses.

To help you save money on gas, Veteran Car Donations has rounded up the following tried-and-true money-saving driving tips:

  • Tip #1: Reduce your driving speed.

If speeding has always been your thing, you might want to stop that habit. Not only does it increase your risk of getting into an accident, but it costs you more money on gas, lowering your gas mileage by roughly 15% to 30% at highway speeds and 10% to 40% in stop-and-go traffic, according to a U.S. Department of Energy report.

  • Tip #2: Don’t use your brakes excessively.

Did you know that overusing your brakes and aggressively braking at speed bumps can lead to an increase in fuel consumption? Instead of slamming on your brake, make it a point to keep a safe distance from the driver in front of you so you can ease off the accelerator. Also, try to maintain a steady 15 mph-20 mph over speed bumps to improve your fuel economy.

  • Tip #3: Change gear smoothly.

Not many realize this, but changing the gear very smoothly can help reduce fuel costs. A good rule of thumb is to stay under 3,000 revs to keep everything in order and your wallet happy.

  • Tip #4: Don’t idle too much.

If you find yourself in any situation where you are forced to idle for a few minutes, such as when you’re waiting for someone to hop into your car or you’re stuck at a railroad crossing, turning off the engine would be a good idea. That’s because you waste gas idling your engine.

  • Tip #5: Turn off the AC system when necessary.

Your car’s air conditioner can reduce fuel economy by over 25%, according to another report from the U.S. Department of Energy. So, if the weather’s not that hot, don’t bother turning on your AC system. Instead, roll your windows down and enjoy the fresh air.

Planning to Retire Your Old Car? Here’s a Meaningful Way to Do It

If you’re convinced that it’s no longer possible for your worn-out car to be fuel-efficient, perhaps it’s time to part ways with it. Buy a new one instead. You wouldn’t want to continue spending money needlessly on the repair and maintenance of that gas guzzler, would you?

You can give it a well-deserved retirement by donating it to us at Veteran Car Donations. We’ll use your vehicle to improve the living conditions of the disadvantaged and suffering veterans in your local community.

These are the men and women who risked their lives to protect us and safeguard our freedoms. Sadly, now that their service is over, they’re left to grapple with homelessness amid poverty, chronic unemployment, service-connected disabilities, and physical and mental illnesses.

We’ll sell your donated vehicle through an auction and distribute the proceeds to our nonprofit partners. All of them are IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that cater to needy veterans across America. They use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with housing and financial assistance, family support, employment and livelihood opportunities, free comprehensive health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, educational scholarships, and many other benefits that are all aimed at uplifting their lives.

As a donor, you will reap valuable rewards. We’ll promptly mail you the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your car soon after it’s sold. The receipt entitles you to claim the highest possible tax deduction.

We’ll also haul your vehicle away for free at a time and place of your preference anywhere in the United States.

We accept other vehicles aside from cars. We also take motorbikes, RVs, buses, watercraft, golf carts, motorized wheelchairs, and more. They don’t even have to be in good condition, either!
