A Stalled Vehicle Poses a Serious Safety Risk!

You’re singing to your favorite road trip playlist, and the next thing you know, your engine gives out while you’re driving down a road. A stalled car is every driver’s worst nightmare. If this happens while you’re stuck in moving traffic, it could lead to crashes, injuries, or even loss of lives. On the other hand, if your car stalls in the middle of nowhere, you could end up stuck for almost an eternity without food or water.

What to Do When Your Engine Stalls

A stalling car engine could result from a mechanical problem or an issue with the fuel or air your vehicle is receiving. It’s important to note that a vehicle can stall after starting it up or while you’re driving. To help you cope when your engine quits on you, Veteran Car Donations is here to guide you on what to do:

  • STEP 1: Don’t panic.

It’s easy to panic when your car stalls while you’re driving. When this happens, the power steering and braking systems won’t work, and you have to use manual force to bring your vehicle to a stop on the side of the road. The secret to bringing such a misadventure to a safe resolution is to remain calm and keep your composure.

  • STEP 2: Turn on the emergency hazard lights.

Once the engine dies, your brake pedal becomes harder to push. Moreover, your car’s stopping distance will also increase, and you may struggle to rotate your steering wheel. Your airbags may not also work as they should, depending on what caused your engine to stall.

At this point, you’ll want to turn on your emergency hazard lights. Look for the button on your dash with a red triangle on it. If you’re driving an older model, you may find it on the steering wheel column.

Promptly turning on your emergency hazard lights will make your turn indicators flash simultaneously and alert other drivers that your car has a problem.

  • STEP 3: Park your car.

To get your car out of traffic, try to put it into neutral and coast it to the side of the road. You’ll want to park your vehicle away from traffic lanes. If your engine won’t start and you’re stuck in a traffic lane, you’ll need to stay inside the vehicle to protect yourself. Next, call 911 to get help in moving your car to safety.

  • STEP 4: Start the engine.

Try starting the engine again once you’ve safely parked your car. Shift to Park if you’re driving a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Shift to neutral if you have a manual transmission. Let the engine run for a few more minutes before you set off.

  • STEP 5: Call for help.

You’ll need to contact your roadside assistance provider, the Automobile Association of America (AAA), or a tow truck if your engine stalls again.
