Frozen Windshield Wipers? We Have the Solution!

If there’s one thing worse than scraping ice from your car’s windows, it has to be the sight of your wipers frozen to your windshield. Driving with frozen wiper blades is a no-no since you can’t drive safely when your view of the road ahead is obstructed.

Fortunately, defrosting your windshield wipers doesn’t require a lot of work, and it certainly doesn’t require a trip to the auto repair shop. Say goodbye to frozen wipers by following the steps below:

Step 1:

Before anything else, make sure to avoid doing any of these three things: pouring hot water on your windshield, forcing your wipers free, and turning your wipers on. Doing any of these can damage your wipers. Plus, hot water can cause the glass to crack.

Step 2:

Turn on your car and hit the windshield defroster button to start melting the ice. While this is taking place, get out of the vehicle and brush off the loose snow and ice. You can use an ice scraper — but do it carefully as you might hit the wipers or damage the windshield.

Step 3:

Lift the wipers using as little force as possible. In case you couldn’t get them to come up easily, don’t keep pulling. Instead, apply a defrosting solution. Continue clearing off pieces of ice and snow while you work. You should be able to notice progress on your blades within a couple of minutes.

Step 4:

Lift the wiper blades gently to see if they’re still stuck. Again, don’t continue pulling if there’s resistance. Wait a few more minutes before reapplying the solution.

Step 5:

When you finally get to lift the blades off with ease, get rid of residual frost on the wiper blades and windshield. You might still need to use your scraper or brush if there are huge ice chunks left. Then, put the wiper blades back in place carefully.

Step 6:

With your windshield wipers free of ice, you may now turn them on from the inside of your car.
