Looking for Zero-Interest Loans to Cover Emergency Expenses?

Experiencing financial problems isn’t uncommon among military families. Sure, they can turn to fast-cash payday lenders, but borrowing money this way comes with plenty of downsides, including high interest rates. Companies that give loans like them are considered predatory.

That’s why military aid organizations exist. One of them is the Army Emergency Relief (AER), a private nonprofit that provides grants and zero-interest loans to help Army members who have pressing financial needs. Keep reading to find out more about AER.

What Is the Army Emergency Relief?

AER is an organization that provides financial assistance to active-duty service members, their families, and retired soldiers facing unexpected hardships. It helps soldiers and their families by enabling them to secure short-term loans or grants to cover emergency expenses such as medical bills, rent, food, transportation, and more.

AER’s goal is to help military families remain financially stable during challenging times. The organization also provides educational programs and counseling to help service members and their families improve their financial literacy skills. With these resources, beneficiaries can make informed decisions about their finances in the future.

So, whether you’re looking for financial assistance or need a little extra guidance in managing your money, AER is here to help.

Who May Qualify for AER?

Individuals who possess any of the following criteria may seek AER assistance through their unit:

  • Soldiers on active duty and their eligible dependents;
  • Army Reserve and National Guard soldiers activated on Title 10 orders for more than 30 days and their eligible dependents;
  • Soldiers retired for longevity, medical, or upon reaching age 60 (reserve component) and their eligible dependents; and
  • Surviving spouses who have not remarried and children of soldiers who died on active duty or died after reaching retirement eligibility.

3 Ways to Apply for AER Assistance

  1. Talk to your chain of command.

Your chain of command has the power to approve immediate financial assistance up to $2,000. They can also refer you to the on-post AER officer.

  1. Visit your AER officer

Any soldier, whether active or retired, can visit their nearest AER officer. These officers are based in various Army installations around the world. If there’s no Army post nearby, you can visit any military installation and request AER assistance from any military aid society.

  1. Call the American Red Cross

If you’re not located within 50 miles of a military installation, you can contact the American Red Cross, which is authorized to provide financial assistance on behalf of AER. Call the American Red Cross at 1-877-272-7337 and select the option for financial assistance.

The Education Benefits You Can Get from AER

Providing education benefits to active-duty and retired Army personnel, as well as their families, is one of AER’s primary goals. The organization’s Education Assistance Program offers financial aid for the educational expenses of its beneficiaries. These include tuition and other fees as well as the costs of room and board, books and supplies, computer technology, and other related expenses for college courses of all levels.

In addition to providing direct financial support for educational purposes, AER also offers scholarships to help members of the military and their families pursue higher education opportunities. Its Loan Repayment Program is also available to assist eligible soldiers in paying off educational debt incurred during service.

Dependents with special needs can also receive education benefits through the AER’s grant program. Eligible spouses and children are provided with financial assistance to help cover tuition and other fees as well as the costs of books and other school-related expenses.
