5 Simple DIY Steps to Check Your Tires’ PSI

Maintaining the right amount of tire pressure for your car is essential to ensuring that you stay safe on the road and that your tires last for a long time.
Having the proper tire inflation can help prevent accelerated wearing on your tires, which can speed up the need for replacements. When your tires are underinflated, they generate high heat levels that can weaken them and cause you to lose control of your car at high speeds.

The good news is that you can regularly check your tires’ psi without having to spend a ton of money. The psi refers to the minimum amount of air pressure needed to support your vehicle at its maximum load. You can check your tires’ psi yourself by following these simple steps:
- Purchase a quality tire pressure gauge.
Invest in a trusted brand when buying a tire pressure gauge so you can be assured that the results are always accurate.
- Perform the test when your tires are cold.
You can do this before you have driven or a few hours after the vehicle has rested.
- Insert the gauge on your tire’s valve stem.
If you are using a digital-type gauge, you only need to insert it into the valve stem of the tire to perform the test. It will begin reading your tire pressure immediately. When using an old-school pencil-type tire gauge, the gauge will pop out to show the number. When you begin to hear a “psst” sound, that’s already air escaping the tire.
- Check the psi numbers.
Compare the psi figure shown in the gauge to the psi that can be found on the sticker inside the driver’s door of your vehicle. If it does not have a sticker, refer to your owner’s manual.
- Release or add air as needed.
If the figure shown in the gauge is higher than the recommended psi, let out some air until you reach the desired number. If it falls below, add air until it reaches the right psi.
