Memorial Day: A Time to Pause and Honor Our Nation’s Heroes

Each year, the country sets one day to remember and honor our fallen heroes. Memorial Day, which will be observed on the 27th of May this year, reminds us of the sacrifices and heroic acts made by the brave men and women of our armed forces who died serving our country.
Formerly known as Decoration Day, this federal holiday started out as an event to commemorate the Union soldiers killed in the American Civil War. It was inspired by the tradition of the Southern states, where locals would show respect to the dead. The idea to pay homage to all deceased American soldiers began right after World War I.
Originally, Memorial Day was celebrated on May 30 of each year. However, with the passage of the Uniform Holidays Bill in 1968, the government decided to change the date so that federal employees can make the most of a three-day weekend. It was in 1971 when the event was observed for the first time on the last Monday of May.
Observing Memorial Day
On this momentous day, part of the tradition is the raising of the American flag at half-staff from dawn until noon. At noontime, the flag is raised to full staff until the end of the day. The half-staff position symbolizes the hundreds of thousands of soldiers who served the country until their very last breath while raising the flag at noon reminds us that while they are no longer with us, they’ll always be remembered and honored.
On Memorial Day, people, especially those who have friends or family members in the military, would visit memorials and cemeteries to honor their deceased relatives and friends. Volunteers are assigned to place the U.S. flag on each grave in national cemeteries. In certain towns and cities, there would be parades involving our veterans and service members.
