How the NMCRS Helps the Navy-Marine Corps Community

Active-duty and retired Navy and Marine Corps personnel who need financial support can seek help from the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS). The nonprofit organization helps eligible members of the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps and their families pay for basic living expenses such as food, utilities, rent, medical and dental bills, essential car repairs, emergency transportation, funerals, and other emergency needs. It also provides grants or loans to beneficiaries depending on their financial needs.

The idea of creating the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society came about in 1904 when several naval officers, their wives, and civilian friends suggested that the proceeds from the 1903 Army-Navy football game be used to help the surviving spouses and children of deceased service members. Before that, the government couldn’t afford to provide benefits for the families of its fallen soldiers.

Fast forward to the present, the Society has more than 180 offices ashore and afloat, ready to extend support to the Navy-Marine Corps community.

Who Is Eligible?

To be eligible for the financial and other assistance offered by NMCRS, one must meet any of the following criteria:

  • An active duty or retired member of the regular Navy and Marine Corps
  • A dependent or dependent survivor of a Navy-Marine Corps member
  • An indigent mother (65 years or older) of a deceased Navy or Marine Corps member who has limited resources and no family to provide for their welfare
  • An ex-spouse (un-remarried) whose marriage to a Navy or Marine Corps member lasted for at least 20 years while the member was on active duty
  • A uniformed member of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA)

What Services Are Offered?

The Society provides a range of services, including the following:

  • Budget counseling to help members with budgeting, investing, credit management, loan repayment, etc.
  • Budgeting for Baby Program (Baby’s First Seabag)
  • Interest-free loans and/or grants in emergencies
  • Coordination with civilian agencies like VA and American Red Cross
  • Education loans
  • Visiting nurses
  • Thrift stores

What Education Benefits Are Available?

Through the NMCRS Education Assistance Program, eligible individuals can receive up to $3,000 in tuition assistance per academic year for college courses. The program covers tuition, fees, course materials, and other costs associated with college-level courses.

The NMCRS also assists members in planning for their future by providing information on education savings plans, mortgages, and other financial decisions. In addition to that, counselors can help beneficiaries with college entry exams such as the SAT and ACT.

Moreover, the NMCRS provides past and present Navy-Marine Corps members and their families with scholarship benefits. The scholarships help cover tuition as well as other fees and expenses associated with attending college or a technical training program, thus enabling beneficiaries to pursue their educational dreams for a brighter future.

Show Our Struggling Veterans You Genuinely Care

Do you have an old car that you no longer use? How about turning it into a tool for transforming the lives of the struggling disadvantaged veterans in your area? You can do that when you donate that vehicle to us at Veteran Car Donations.

We’ll auction off your donated vehicle and use the proceeds to support the life improvement programs for veterans of our nonprofit partners. These IRS-certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations are dedicated to helping former service members who are suffering from homelessness due to poverty, chronic unemployment, service-connected disabilities, and serious illnesses, including mental health issues.

Our charity partners use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with housing and financial assistance, employment and livelihood opportunities, family support, free quality health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, and many other services designed to improve their living conditions.

As our way of showing you our gratitude for your donation, we’ll promptly mail to you the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your auto soon after its sale. This will entitle you to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season.

We’ll also be hauling your vehicle away without charging you a single dollar. We can collect your donation anywhere in the United States.

However, the best reward you’ll get is the priceless feeling of satisfaction, knowing that your act of charity will give our neglected and suffering heroes opportunities to fulfill their most cherished dream: to live a decent and dignified life.
