5 Effective Relaxation Techniques for PTSD Sufferers

Relaxation is one of the main methods recommended by mental health experts to treat patients suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This simple option mitigates their extreme reactions to events that cause them fear and anxiety.

These are at least five relaxation techniques recommended by experts for people diagnosed with PTSD.

  1. Mindfulness meditation

Mindfulness meditation is defined as the ability of a person to get in touch with and be fully aware of the present and not be overly reactive to the events going on around them.

Mindfulness meditation is a mental training practice that helps individuals focus their thoughts on present emotions, thoughts, and sensations. The practice also helps them disconnect themselves from recollections of the past. This is helpful for PTSD sufferers who are prone to having flashbacks.

Mindfulness meditation involves breathing practices, mental imagery, awareness of body and mind, and muscle and body relaxation.

  1. Physical activities

Physical activities such as running, hiking, and sports can help individuals suffering from PTSD find a positive outlet for their excess energy and stress. These physical activities help them focus their energies on the task at hand rather than the negative thoughts and emotions that tend to overwhelm them.

  1. Aromatherapy

Aromas or smells are found to benefit those who suffer from chronic stress and anxiety associated with PTSD. The soothing effects of lavender, sage, peppermint, and other oils that are massaged between strategic pressure points of the body can calm and soothe a patient suffering from the effects of PTSD.

  1. Art

PTSD patients are encouraged to express themselves through various forms of art. This allows individuals to externalize their emotions and distressing memories through a productive activity.

  1. Pets

Enjoying the company of support animals is also a great way to deal with PTSD and anxiety. Animals are trained to help people manage their PTSD-related symptoms. Patients find themselves comforted by the presence of these trained pets.

How You Can Help Veterans with PTSD

Thousands of veterans are still suffering from PTSD long after they have left the military. Memories of the traumatic events they witnessed during past combat missions continue to haunt them. Nightmares follow them everywhere they go.

They need help. You can easily provide this by donating any vehicle you no longer need to us at Veteran Car Donations. We’ll auction off your donated vehicle and use the proceeds to support our charitable partners in providing life-changing benefits to deserving veterans and their families. These nonprofit organizations provide their beneficiaries with financial assistance, free medical treatment, employment opportunities, family support, and other essential services.

We accept nearly all types of vehicles regardless of their age or condition. We also operate nationwide, so you can donate wherever you are located in the country.

You don’t have to worry about the removal of your unwanted vehicle because we will provide you with our free pick-up and towing services at a date, time, and place of your convenience.

Because we are in partnership with IRS-certified 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations, you can be sure that your donation will go to its intended beneficiaries. Moreover, you are assured that your donation is tax-deductible. We’ll send you by mail your 100-percent tax-deductible receipt within 30 days after your vehicle is sold. Using this receipt, you can claim your tax deduction when you file your itemized federal income tax return in the next tax season.
