The law was signed into effect by President Biden in August 2022. It is the most significant expansion of benefits and services for veterans exposed to toxic substances in more than 30 years.

What Is the PACT Act?

One of the main provisions of the PACT Act is the creation of the Burn Pit Registry, which is a database of veterans who might have come in contact with toxic substances from burn pits. The registry allows veterans to self-report their exposure to burn pits, including the location and duration of their exposure.
The registry is also used by veterans to track their symptoms over time. Vets can report any new symptoms they experience, as well as any changes in their existing symptoms. The information can help healthcare providers better understand the long-term effects of burn pit exposure, leading them to come up with better treatment options for affected veterans.
Additionally, the Burn Pit Registry helps qualified vets receive the care and benefit they need. It makes it easier for them to apply for disability benefits related to burn pit exposure.
The PACT Act also requires the VA to provide medical examinations to veterans who are enrolled in the registry. These exams can help identify any health problems that may be related to burn pit exposure. The VA is also tasked to develop a public information campaign to inform veterans about the Burn Pit Registry and the potential health risks associated with burn pit exposure.
How Can the PACT Act Help Veterans with Burn Pit Exposure?
The PACT Act and the accompanying registry provide veterans who have been exposed to burn pits with numerous benefits. Here are some of them:
- Easier access to disability benefits
As mentioned earlier, the registry will make it easier for veterans to apply for disability benefits related to burn pit exposure. Veterans will be able to point to their inclusion in the registry as evidence of their exposure, which will streamline the application process and reduce the burden on veterans.
- Better tracking of health problems
The registry will also help the Department of Defense and VA better track the health problems experienced by veterans who have been exposed to burn pits, making it easier for researchers to recognize trends and patterns in burn pit exposure. This means they’ll be able to develop better treatments for the health problems associated with burn pit exposure.
- Improved care and treatment
By monitoring the health of affected veterans, the registry will also ease the process for the VA to provide better care and treatment. Enrolled vets will have the chance to receive more targeted care and treatment based on their specific health problems, which can improve their overall quality of life.
Who Else Can Benefit from the PACT Act?
Aside from veterans exposed to toxic burn pits, others who have been exposed to the following toxic substances are also eligible to file claims at the VA:
- Air pollutants such as sulfur fire, oil well fire, dust, particulates, and sand
- Radiation from nuclear weapons testing, depleted uranium, and X-rays
- Chemicals like chromium, Camp Lejeune water supplies, Agent Orange, other herbicides, pesticides, and industrial solvents
- Occupational hazards like lead, asbestos, fuel, special paint on military vehicles, insulating fluids, and vibration
