On August 4th, Pay Tribute to the Men and Women of Our Nation’s Oldest Seagoing Service

U.S. Coast Guard in Patrol | Veteran Car DonationsThe United States Coast Guard is one of the six service branches of our country’s armed forces. Formed on August 4th, 1790, it’s our nation’s oldest seagoing service.  While it’s technically a military branch, it operates under the Department of Homeland Security during peacetime. However, when the nation needs its services, control of the Coast Guard can be transferred to the Navy by the President or Congress.

One of the primary roles of the U.S. Coast Guard is as a first responder and humanitarian service provider. It assists those in distress at sea or ashore. During Hurricane Katrina, for example, the U.S. Coast Guard played a huge role in saving people’s lives. The hurricane struck the city of New Orleans and surrounding areas in August 2005, killing more than 1,800 people and causing $125 billion in damages. During that time, the U.S. Coast Guard rescued about 35,000 people from their flooded homes.

That’s why the U.S. Coast Guard Day on August 4th is such a big deal. It’s our chance to thank and honor the members of our Coast Guard for their incalculable service to our nation. Let’s show our appreciation for these brave men and women for the work that they do — keeping our seas safe and risking their lives to assist those who need it.

As we celebrate U.S. Coast Guard Day on August 4th, let it also serve as a reminder about the services and sacrifices made by former members of all branches of our military.

It’s sad to know that many of these veterans are living miserable lives. They are suffering from homelessness, chronic unemployment, disabilities and illnesses, including service-connected mental health disorders.
