Why Getting a Job Remains a Challenge for Veterans with Disabilities

Many of our troops face unique challenges when they return to civilian life. One such challenge is finding a decent long-term job, particularly for veterans with disabilities.

Veteran Car Donations is here to put the spotlight on this subject as we look at the employment rate for veterans with disabilities, the reasons why some companies shy away from hiring them, what factors make them attractive hires, and federal resources aimed at improving their employability.

What’s the Employment Rate for Veterans with Disabilities?

As of September 2021, the employment rate for veterans with disabilities was 26.3%, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. This is lower than the employment rate for veterans without disabilities, which was 42.4%. This highlights the need for increased support and resources for veterans with disabilities to help them succeed in the workplace.

Reasons Why Some Companies Don’t Hire Veterans with Disabilities

It is illegal for companies to discriminate against individuals with disabilities, including veterans, under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). However, despite this legal protection, some companies are still hesitant to hire vets with disabilities due to misconceptions or stereotypes about their abilities.

One reason for this is the lack of understanding or awareness about the unique skills and experiences that veterans with disabilities can bring to the workplace. Some employers assume that these individuals would be unable to perform certain tasks or would require significant accommodations. What they probably don’t know is that a lot of these veterans are highly qualified and able to perform a wide range of jobs with minimal accommodations.

Employers may also be concerned that hiring a veteran with a disability will increase their costs. They may worry about the cost of providing accommodations or about the possibility of lawsuits.

Moreover, some employers may be prejudiced against veterans with disabilities. They may believe that veterans with disabilities are not as capable as other workers.

Lastly, some employers are simply unfamiliar with their legal obligations under the ADA, or may not understand the benefits of hiring veterans with disabilities. As a result, they inadvertently engage in discriminatory hiring practices without even realizing it.

The Unique Qualities of Veterans with Disabilities

While veterans with disabilities may face certain challenges in the workplace, they also bring a unique set of skills and experiences that can be invaluable to employers.

Many of them have developed strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills as a result of their military training. They have also experienced working in high-pressure environments, which means they’ve acquired the ability to work well under pressure.

Moreover, their time in the military has enabled them to gain a strong sense of discipline and commitment, which can translate into a strong work ethic.

What Are the Available Resources for Veterans with Disabilities?

Resources are available to help veterans with disabilities find and maintain their employment. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) offers a Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment (VR&E) program, which helps them identify their strengths and skills, explore different career options, and receive training and education to help them succeed in the workplace.

Other resources include Disabled American Veterans, the Wounded Warrior Project, and the American Veterans with Brain Injuries (AVBI) organization. These organizations offer a range of services, including career counseling, job training, and support groups.

Your Old Car Can Be a Vital Source of Hope for Our Needy Veterans

Our former servicemen and servicewomen deserve to live a decent and dignified civilian life, not one where they struggle to make ends meet. Sadly, this isn’t the case for many of them. That’s why we at Veteran Car Donations are here to help turn their lives around, and we’d love to have you join our mission by simply donating to us any vehicle you can spare.

We’ll auction off your car and transfer the proceeds directly to our veteran-focused nonprofit partners. These IRS-approved 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations cater to veterans who have difficulty finding jobs, those who are impoverished and homeless, those with service-connected disabilities, and those with serious health conditions, including mental disorders.

Our charity partners use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with employment and livelihood opportunities, housing and financial assistance, family support, free quality health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, and other services meant to improve their living conditions.

To show you our gratitude for your charitable contribution, we’ll send you by mail the 100% tax-deductible sales receipt of your car within days after its sale. This will entitle you to claim the maximum tax deduction based on your vehicle’s selling price or fair market value.

We’ll also be hauling your vehicle away without charging you a single dollar. We offer this free towing service to our donors in all parts of the country, which means we can collect your vehicle wherever you had it parked or stored anywhere in the United States.

Best of all, you’ll experience the great joy and satisfaction of knowing that you’re doing something that can transform the lives of the suffering veterans in your area.

We accept almost all types of vehicles, including those that are damaged and no longer running.
