6 Actions You Need to Take When You Get Involved in a Car Crash

Accidents on the road are an unfortunate fact of life. When you get in a car accident, you can easily get shaken up physically and mentally, making you unable to think clearly. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been in a serious collision or just a fender bender. For this reason, it’s extremely important to know the right actions you should take in the aftermath of a crash.

Preparing yourself and knowing what to do in the event of a car accident can save lives, reduce injuries, and ensure that the incident is dealt with properly. To help you educate yourself about this possibility, Veteran Car Donations has put together the things you should do when your car gets bumped or you figure in a car crash.

  1. Check if anyone is hurt.

Your first priority ought to be your personal safety. Don’t leave the scene of the accident before assessing yourself and your passengers for injuries. If you or somebody else need medical assistance, call 911 or ask somebody to do it for you. However, if you’ve suffered serious injuries, try not to move your body while you’re waiting for emergency personnel.

  1. Drive your vehicle to the side of the road.

Unless you got involved in a severe crash, try to drive your car to the side of the road so that it doesn’t impede oncoming traffic. Be sure to turn your hazard lights or set up reflective emergency triangles or flare to alert other drivers to slow down.

  1. Exchange details with the other party.

Before you interact with the other driver, be sure to keep your emotions in check whether you’re at fault or otherwise. You’d need to exchange the following details with the other party involved. These details include their name, address, phone number, car registration number, and insurance information.

  1. Document the incident.

Use your smartphone’s camera, video, and voice memo features to record the details of the crash as much as possible. Remember to note the date, time, and location of the accident. It’s also best to record the directions the vehicles were heading before and after the incident, as well as their positions relative to the street. Don’t forget to take photos of the extent of the damage, including the skid marks.

  1. Call the police or highway patrol.

If it’s a minor collision, the police may not dedicate their resources to the scene of the accident. However, if they do arrive, be sure to get the officer’s name, badge number, and contact information. Don’t forget to get a copy of the accident report from the law enforcement officer.

  1. Call your insurance provider.

Contact your insurance provider right away. It’s their job to help you navigate your options.

What You Can Do with Your Damaged Vehicle

If you have a car that has been damaged due to a road accident and you no longer want to have it repaired, you can still make good use of it by handing it over to us at Veteran Car Donations. We’ll give that vehicle a new and worthy purpose by using it to transform the lives of the struggling veterans and their families in your community. Moreover, we will provide you with the most rewarding giving experience that will make you feel great.

Our team will have your donated vehicle fixed before putting it up for auction. We will then hand over the proceeds to our veteran-focused and IRS-certified 501(c)3 charity partners. These are reputable nonprofit organizations that are dedicated to helping former U.S. service members who have become homeless and impoverished, those who can’t find decent jobs, and those who are suffering from service-connected disabilities and serious illnesses, including mental health issues.

Our nonprofit partners use the funding we give them to provide their beneficiaries with housing assistance, financial support, employment and livelihood opportunities, free comprehensive health care and medical treatment, psychotherapy services, family support, educational scholarships, and many other benefits.

You’ll also benefit from your charitable contribution. We’ll pick up and tow your vehicle at no cost to you anywhere in the country. You’ll also have the privilege to claim the maximum tax deduction in the next tax season.

However, these material rewards may pale in comparison to the priceless joy of knowing that you’re doing something that will give needy veterans the help they need to get back on their feet.

Since we’re willing to accept nearly all vehicle types, feel free to donate whatever vehicle you have regardless of its age and condition.
