The City of Lights knows how to honor its own. From the names etched into plaques on Memorial Island to the stories preserved inside the historic G.A.R. Hall, this city carries a deep respect for those who’ve served.
If you’ve always wanted to give back to our local heroes, one way to do so is by donating an unwanted vehicle to Veteran Car Donations. It’s your chance to show up for the people who helped build this city from the ground up.
Let’s walk through how it works and how your vehicle can become part of something bigger than a parking space or a tax break.
How Our Donation Process Works
Donating your vehicle here is simple, fast, and handled by folks who know the streets of Aurora, from the tight corners downtown to the cul-de-sacs off Indian Trail. We aim to make it easy for you to do something meaningful.
1. Give Us the Basics
Start your donation online or by calling 877-594-5822. Let us know what kind of vehicle you’re donating, where it’s located, and when you’re ready for pickup. Don’t worry if it hasn’t moved in months – we take vehicles in nearly any condition.
2. We Haul Your Vehicle Away
Our towing partners are based right here in the city and nearby towns. Whether your vehicle is parked behind a home in West Aurora, in a downtown garage, or along a side street in the Fox Valley, we’ll coordinate pickup at no cost to you.
3. Get Your Tax Receipt with Ease
Within 30 days of your vehicle’s sale, we’ll send you a tax-deductible receipt by mail. If it sells for more than $500, you may be able to deduct the full sale price. If it sells for less, you can still deduct up to $500. No guesswork, no red tape.
When Mykol had initial doubts about the process, one quick call changed everything:
“The online donation form is easy to follow. I uploaded pictures, but not sure if I did that correctly, because no photos were shown on the screen and no confirmation that photos were received. That made me wonder if my form was received, so I called. The helpful representative confirmed receipt and explained the simple process. The very next day, I received a call from the tow truck driver telling me when he would arrive – and he did. The whole process was quick, and I received my receipt by email.”
Why Donate? Here’s a List of Reasons Why
Letting go of a vehicle can feel like a chore, but donating it can make it feel like a gift. A car donation supports veterans living just a few blocks away, while offering real, practical benefits for you, too.
- Transform lives: From housing and job opportunities to mental health care and transitioning assistance, your gift funds real services for former military members throughout Aurora.
- Skip the stress of selling: No need to list your car online, field flaky buyers, or negotiate prices.
- Tax benefits without the guesswork: Once your vehicle sells, we’ll send a tax-deductible receipt. We’ll do our best to ensure you get the highest amount possible.
- Fast, local pickup: Most vehicles are towed within a day or two, and you don’t even have to be home. Our local partners make it easy.
- Donate your car as-is: Don’t waste your precious time and money fixing it up or making it presentable – we’ll take it even if it hasn’t started in months.
Common Aurora Pickup Zones
From riverfront apartments to quiet streets off Indian Trail, our local towing crew knows the City of Lights inside and out – and they’ll come to you wherever you are.
- Historic Downtown & RiverEdge: We’re used to navigating tight alleys, older garages, and event-day traffic. Whether your car’s parked near the G.A.R. Hall or along Broadway, we can get in and get it out.
- East Aurora & Fox Valley: From single-family homes near Eola Road to apartment lots near Fox Valley Mall, we frequently pick up vehicles in this busy, well-connected area. Narrow driveways or shared parking shouldn’t be a problem for us.
- West Aurora & Phillips Park: With its wide residential blocks and classic ranch homes, pickups here are straightforward – whether you’re near Prairie Street, Montgomery Road, or just off the park itself.
- North Aurora & Mooseheart Area: Suburban cul-de-sacs, school zones, and quick freeway access make this area a regular stop for our team. We’ve picked up everything from SUVs to campers in this fast-growing part of town.
- Near Memorial Island & G.A.R. Hall: If your car is tucked downtown, near the riverwalk or the veterans memorials, we’ll coordinate pickup around your schedule – even during city events or construction zones.
We keep our pickup radius wide for a reason: to make it easy on you. Even if your location isn’t listed above, call 877-594-5822, and we’ll see if we can come to you.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. How does my donated vehicle help the vets in my area?
We auction it and distribute the funds to our trusted nonprofit partners. That money goes right back into Aurora – helping retired troops access housing near the Fox River, attend local job-training programs, cover bills during tough times, and connect with mental health support close to home.
2. Can I give you a car that’s damaged or doesn’t run? What vehicles do you not accept?
Yes, you can. We accept most vehicles, even if they’re damaged, no longer running, or didn’t pass an emissions test. If it has a title and you’re the legal owner, chances are we can take it.
The only exceptions are abandoned or stolen vehicles. We can’t process donations without legal ownership and paperwork.
For a comprehensive list of the vehicle types we accept, visit this page.
3. What should I expect during and after pickup?
After towing your ride, the driver will give you a donation receipt showing it was hauled off and that you’re no longer liable for it.
After that, you’ll want to:
- Cancel your insurance policy
- Return or dispose of your license plates (based on Illinois state requirements)
- Notify the DMV to officially de-register the vehicle
That’s it for you. We handle everything else.
4. Does the car have to be at my house, or can you pick it up somewhere else?
We can tow your vehicle from almost any location, not just your home. Whether it’s parked at a repair shop, storage lot, or another private property (with permission), just let us know the address, and we’ll coordinate the rest.
5. When will I get my tax receipt?
It should be in your mailbox within 30 days of your vehicle’s sale. If you need it sooner or prefer a digital copy, don’t hesitate to reach out, and we’ll gladly accommodate. This receipt will include everything you need to claim your deduction when tax season rolls around.
6. What if there’s an issue with the title?
Missing title? Name change? Unfinished paperwork? We’ve got your back. Most issues can be handled quickly and efficiently by our team, but if you need to stop by in person, head to 339 E Indian Trail – that’s the Aurora Secretary of State location that handles titles. We’ll get you ready, so it’s smooth sailing.
