National Novel Writing Month: Bring Out Your Inner Dickens this November
Every November, hundreds of thousands of writers, pros or newbies, find themselves glued to their laptops and pulling endless all-nighters. Coffee will be everyone’s best friend once again, and we’ll be seeing fashionable eye bags in libraries and cafes. It’s National Novel Writing Month!
Popularly known as NaNoWriMo or NaNo, this yearly event is a fun online challenge for just about anyone who loves to write. The whole idea is to encourage people to get into their thinking hats and come up with a 50,000-word novel of any genre. Once they submit their masterpieces before the end of November (11:59 p.m. of the 30th to be exact), participants can finally heave sighs of relief and satisfaction.
The first ever NaNo contest took place in 1999, with only 21 participants and six winners. The challenge eventually rose to popularity as years passed, with more and more people signing up to see how far their writing skills can go. In 2012, the numbers skyrocketed to 341,375 participants, with 38,438 of them successfully completing the project and earning their title as NaNo winners.
What Are the Rules?
Aside from finishing a 50,000-word novel between the 1st of November and the 30th, there are no other specific rules. A complete work is the only criterion for winning. Although no judge is assigned, a submitted novel has to go through the verification process to ensure two things: It contains at least 50,000 words and there’s no constant repetition of the same words.
Time to Get Your Creative Juices Flowing!
Ever dreamt of being a well-known novelist? Do you want to follow in the footsteps of Hemingway or Coelho? National Novel Writing Month might just be your stepping stone!
If you’re just starting out, don’t worry! There’s always a first time for everything. Your willingness to take on this mentally strenuous task alone is already a great thing.
Who knows? You might even publish your own novel someday! To get started on your literary journey, check out our suggestions below:
- Have a daily writing goal.
While NaNo encourages participants to complete at least 1,667 words a day, you can definitely set your own goal, depending on your pace or schedule. Remember, there would always be days when your brain needs to rest. Writer’s block is something you couldn’t avoid either.
- Avoid distractions at all costs.
As much as possible, distance yourself from everything that often gets your attention. While you’re on your mission to write the greatest novel ever, stay away from your phone, TV, and pretty much anything that hinders your work.
- Schedule a time for writing.
Make sure to write during hours when your brain feels most alive. It can be as early as 5 in the morning, or if you’re more of a night owl, 10 p.m. might work best.
- Write a plot that you know you’ll love.
Don’t write about a certain storyline just because it’s popular in the mainstream. Write about something that enthralls your heart. Doing what you love always brings out the best results.
- Get involved in the NaNo forums.
It’s also a good idea to talk to your fellow aspiring novelists every once in a while. Don’t be afraid to ask around for a few tips, especially if you’re a first-timer. You might even come across a future collaborator!
- Just keep going.
There are times when you’d feel like giving up, and we couldn’t blame you. Then again, why would you want to throw away all the effort you’ve spent for it? Think about everything that you’ve gone through, all the sacrifices you had to make, only to end up flushing them down the drain.
Every time you get such feelings, just take a break, regroup, and continue writing. You got this!
Touch Hearts with Our Vets’ Stories of Heroism
On Novel Writing Month, you may want to write about the heroism of our former troops, how they risked their lives to defend our freedoms and protect our nation’s security, and how a good number of them, unfortunately, ended up as homeless beggars on our streets, impoverished, jobless, and suffering from service-connected injuries and disabilities and physical and mental health issues.
Their sad stories can touch even the toughest hearts. Your readers and you as well may feel the compulsion to reach out and help them. You can easily do so by donating a car or a truck or any other type of vehicle to us at Veteran Car Donations.
We’ll sell your donated vehicle through auction and use the proceeds to support the programs of our nonprofit partners that are dedicated to providing vital assistance to our struggling veterans and their families. Thanks to vehicle donations from our generous donors, our hard-luck veterans will finally get some relief as they receive mortgage-free and specially adapted housing, physical and mental health care, job opportunities, education scholarships, and other benefits.
What’s special about our car donation program is that our donors also benefit from their charitable contribution since they’ll get to receive personal rewards, including the highest possible tax deduction after their vehicle is sold.
You can donate to Veteran Car Donations by either calling us or filling out our online donation form. We accept vehicle donations wherever you are in the United States since we have car donation programs in all 50 states.
